Sneak Peek new images of upcoming toy merchandise tied into the 2012 release of Sony's "The Amazing Spider-Man", providing a look at the Marvel Comics' reptilian super-villain 'The Lizard'.
The new movie stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field, opening in 3D, July 3, 2012 : "...like most teenagers his age, 'Peter Parker' is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. In his journey to put the pieces of his past together he uncovers a secret his father held, that will ultimately shape his destiny as 'Spider-Man'..."
'The Lizard', aka 'Dr. Curt Connors', debuted in Marvel's "The Amazing Spider-Man" #6 (November 1963), created by writer Stan Lee and illustrator Steve Ditko.
Born in Coral Gables, Florida, Connors was a doctor who enlisted in the army, then sent off to war to perform emergency battlefield surgery on wounded GIs. But Connors right arm was injured in a blast and had to be amputated.
Returning to civilian life as a research technologist, Connors became obsessed with uncovering the secrets of reptilian limb regeneration. From his home in the Florida Everglades and with the assistance of war buddy 'Ted Sallis', Connors developed an experimental serum extracted from reptilian DNA.
After successfully regrowing the missing limb of a rabbit, Connors ingested the formula himself. His missing arm grew back, but he also transformed into a reptilian humanoid monster.
As the 'Lizard', Connors' strength increased to superhuman levels, with his speed, stamina, agility and reflexes raised to a level equivalent to that of 'Spider-Man'.
The Lizard can also scale walls using a combination of claws and micro-scales on his hands and feet that create molecular friction. He is highly resistant to injury due to his scaly hide, with enhanced healing abilities, allowing him to quickly recover from grievous wounds, including regenerating lost limbs. He also has a powerful tail which he can whip at high speeds and razor-sharp teeth set in muscular jaws that can deal a lethal bite.
Like all reptiles, the Lizard possesses cold-blooded characteristics, acutely sensitive to drops in temperature, causing his metabolism to slow down and become dormant if exposed to frigid temperatures.
The Lizard can also mentally communicate and command all reptiles within a mile of himself via telepathy, also compelling humans to act out their primal urges, by suppressing emotional control in their 'amygdala', aka 'the lizard brain'.

April 11, 2010 Casting continues to find the ultimate 'Peter Parker' aka 'Spider-Man' for director Marc Webb's upcoming feature "Spider-Man 4". The new film will focus on the character's early High School years that defined his adult life as the radioactive spider-bitten wall-crawler, known as the 'Spider-Man'. Director Webb ("(500) days Of Summer") is looking to bring some fresh romance to the angst of 'Peter Parker', attracting more of a teenage female audience.

From a screenplay by James Vanderbilt, Webb will work with producers Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin in developing the project, which will begin production later this year. "At its core, Spider-Man is a small, intimate human story about an everyday teenager that takes place in an epic super-human world., " said Amy Pascal, co-chairman, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, president, Columbia Pictures.
"The key for us as we sought a new director was to identify filmmakers who could give sharp focus to Peter Parker's life. We wanted someone who could capture the awe of being in Peter's shoes so the audience could experience his sense of discovery while giving real heart to the emotion, anxiety, and recklessness of that age and coupling all of that with the adrenaline of Spider-Man's adventure. We believe Marc Webb is the perfect choice to bring us on that journey."
"This is a dream come true, " said Webb.
"I couldn't be more aware of the challenge, responsibility, or opportunity. Sam Raimi's virtuoso rendering of Spider-Man is a humbling precedent to follow and build upon. The first three films are beloved for good reason. But I think the Spider-Man mythology transcends not only generations but directors as well. I am signing on not to 'take over' from Sam. That would be impossible. Not to mention arrogant. I'm here because there's an opportunity for ideas, stories, and histories that will add a new dimension, canvas, and creative voice to Spider-Man." Webb has won several awards including MTV's 2009 Best Director award for Green Day's "21 Guns" music video, the 2006 Best Rock Video for AFI's "Miss Murder," and Best Group Video for The All-American Rejects' "Move Along."
The Music Video Production Association honored him in 2006 as the Director of the Year for his work with Weezer, AAR, and My Chemical Romance. In addition to two Golden Globe nominations including Best Picture (musical or comedy), his first feature film," (500) Days of Summer", starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, was nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Feature.
Webb was also awarded the Spotlight Award, which honors outstanding directorial debuts, by the National Board of Review. Click the images to enlarge and Sneak Peek "(500) Days Of Summer", Green Day's "21 Guns" and The All-American Rejects' "Move Along"...

Here is the official press release from Sony, regarding the fate of "Spider-Man" the movie franchise, following the departure of director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire:

"...Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012. Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.

The new chapter in the Spider-Man franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.

“A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three Spider-Man films that set a new bar for the genre.

When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans.

We’re very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning,” said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

“Working on the Spider-Man movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job,” said Sam Raimi.

“We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade. This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine Spider-Man in anyone else’s hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable,” said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio’s chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise.

“Now everything begins anew, and that’s got us all tremendously excited about what comes next. Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can’t wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012.”

"Spider-Man will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures.

"We have always believed that story comes first and story guides the direction of these films and as we move onto the next chapter, we will stay true to that principle and will do so with the highest respect for the source material and the fans and moviegoers who deserve nothing but the best when it comes to bringing these stories and characters to life on the big screen."

The studio will have more news about Spider-Man in 2012 in the coming weeks as it prepares for production of the film...."

January 11, 2010

According to reports, Sony Pictures has decided to 'reboot' their "Spider-Man" movie franchise without director Sam "Evil Dead" Raimi and star Tobey "Seabiscuit" Maguire. Apparently Raimi had 'creative' differences with the "Spider-Man 4" screenplay and was unable to deliver a film within Sony's time-frame. Although "Spider-Man 3" earned $890,871,626 worldwide on an "Avatar"-sized budget of $258 million, Sony refused to acquiesce to Raimi's production start delay, or his multi-million dollar asking price. Raimi reportedly didn't 'get' the fan-fave "Spider-Man" villain 'Venom', showcased in "Spider-Man 3" and his choice of the 'Vulture' to be the main super-villain of "Spider-Man 4", played by 56-year old John Malkovich, apparently didn't fly too well either. Keeping in line with "Spider-Man" comic book tradition, when Marvel updated the boxy figures of "Spider-Man" co-creator Steve Ditko's illustrations with "Jazzy" Johnny Romita, the studio will now develop a fresh take on the character with a new screenplay by Jamie Vanderbilt and a real 'teen' actor to play teenager 'Peter Parker', aka "Spider-Man".

Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal and Columbia Pictures' Matt Tolmach mutually agreed that their Marvel movie franchise needs a fresh start. Click the images to enlarge and Sneak Peek "Spider-Man"...

Thanks to the new-found popularity of the 'Volturi' in "The Twilight Saga" movies, reports have actor John Malkovich circling the role of 'Spider-Man' comic book villain 'The Vulture' for Sony/Columbia's upcoming "Spider-Man 4", set to start lensing Spring 2010 in New York.

Created by writer Stan Lee and illustrator Steve Ditko, debuting in Marvel Comics' "The Amazing Spider-Man #2 (May 1963), the Vulture aka 'Adrian Toomes' was a former electronics engineer and business partner of 'Gregory Bestman'. After creating a flight harness that also provided 'super-strength', Toomes rushed into Bestman's office to share the news, but discovered his partner had absconded with all of the company's funds.

Looking for revenge, a bitter Toomes modifies his flight harness wings to be razor sharp and customized for projectile weaponry.

The Vulture first encountered Spider-Man during a jewelry heist, eventually joining the 'Sinister Six' criminal alliance led by 'Doctor Octopus' and becoming a close ally of fellow costumed villain 'Electro'.

December 2, 2009...

"Spider-Man 4" starts filming March 2010 in New York City and Michigan, the next installment in Columbia's Marvel Comics' movie franchise, to be directed (again) by Sam "Evil Dead" Raimi.

The first 3 films earned $2,496,346,518 worldwide, on budgets of $100 million each.

Actor Tobey Maguire will return (again) as 'Peter Parker', a goofy teenager bitten by a radioactive spider, giving him super-powers AND super-problems.

Fans are still undecided as to which "Spider-Man" comic book villains they would like to see on the big screen, with 'The Lizard' and 'Electro' proving to be the most popular.

According to reports the character of "Black Cat' is now confirmed to appear in the film. 'Black Cat', aka 'Felicia Hardy', created by writer Marv Wolfman and illustrator Keith Pollard, first appeared in "The Amazing Spider-Man" #194 (July 1979), as a skilled 'cat burglar', occasional crime fighter and adventurer.

While she later gained powers through a combination of science/magic, her current abilities are natural.

Both villains were created in the 1960's, for Marvel's "Amazing Spider-Man" comic books, by writer Stan Lee and illustrator Steve Ditko.

'The Lizard', aka 'Curt Connors' was a surgeon who enlisted in the service to help wounded GIs, but his arm was injured and had to be amputated. Connors then became obsessed with uncovering the secrets of 'reptilian regeneration' from his home in the Everglades, extracting a serum taken from the DNA of a lizard.

Successfully regrowing the missing limb of a rabbit, Connors quickly ingested the serum , regrowing his arm, but also transforming into a reptilian monster.

'Electro', aka 'Maxwell Dillon' had ambitions of being an electrical engineer, taking a job as a lineman for an electric company. While repairing a power line still connected to its spool, Dillon was struck by lightning. But instead of being killed, the freak accident caused a 'mutagenic change' in his nervous system, allowing him to 'control' vast amounts of electricity. After creating a costume to conceal his identity, Dillon turned to a life of crime as 'Electro'.

Producer Laura Ziskin is aiming for a May 2011 release for "Spider-Man 4", nine years after the first film's spectacular debut...

February 27, 2009...

"SPIDER-MAN: Turn Off The Dark", a live theatrical Marvel musical will open in New York City Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Broadway's Hilton Theatre, 213 West 42nd Street, with preview performances starting Saturday, January 16, 2010.

Directed by Tony Award-winner Julie Taymor with 22-time Grammy Award-winning Bono and The Edge creating new music/lyrics, SPIDER-MAN is written by Taymor and Glen Berger, produced by Hello Entertainment/David Garfinkle, Martin McCallum, Marvel Entertainment/David Maisel, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Jeremiah Harris, in association with Omneity Entertainment/Richard Weinberg, the Mayerson/Gould/Hauser/Tysoe Group, Patricia Lambrecht and Jam Theatricals/S2BN. Julie Taymor is best known as director of Disney's "The Lion King".

"...Drawing from over forty years of Marvel comic books for inspiration, SPIDER-MAN spins a new take on the mythic tale of a young man propelled from a modest rowhouse in Queens to the sky-scraping spire of the Chrysler Building, the bustling offices of the Daily Bugle, through the dizzying canyons of Manhattan, to new vistas never before seen. The musical follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down—literally—when he's bitten by a genetically altered spider and wakes up the next morning clinging to his bedroom ceiling. This bullied science-geek—suddenly endowed with astonishing powers—soon learns, however, that with great power comes great responsibility as villains test not only his physical strength but also his strength of character. Spider-Man's battles will hurtle the audience through an origin story both recognizable and unexpected--yielding new characters as well as familiar faces--until a final surprising confrontation casts a startling new light on this hero's journey..."

Principal creative/design team for SPIDER-MAN includes Daniel Ezralow, Choreographer ("Across the Universe", "The Green Bird"); George Tsypin, Sets ("The Magic Flute", "The Little Mermaid"); Eiko Ishioka, Costumes (Academy Award for "Bram Stoker's Dracula", Tony Award nomination for "M. Butterfly", Donald Holder, Lighting (Tony Awards for "The Lion King", "South Pacific"); Jonathan Deans, Sound ("Fosse", "The Beatles LOVE" by Cirque du Soleil, "Young Frankenstein", "Ragtime"); and Teese Gohl, Musical Supervisor ("Across the Universe", "Frida")...
